Overview

What is OnPay?

OnPay's entire proposition is that there is one plan. Forty nine dollars a month plus six dollars per person, and that price includes everything the product does. No Simple, Plus and Premium ladder, no discovering that multi state payroll or a needed report sits one tier up. In a category built on tier games, that alone is why it keeps its customers.

What is included at that price

Unlimited pay runs, federal, state and local tax filing and deposits, W-2 and 1099 preparation and filing, multi state payroll, employee self service, and integrations to the common accounting products. Garnishments are handled. New hire reporting is filed.

It also handles categories most competitors treat as specialist: agricultural payroll with Form 943, nonprofit and clergy payroll, and restaurant payroll with tip credit handling. If your business is one of those, the shortlist gets very short very quickly.

Reputation

Support is the thing reviewers raise unprompted. Real people, based in the United States, who know payroll rather than reading a script. For a company running its own payroll without a payroll specialist on staff, that is the feature they are actually buying.

Migration is included. OnPay will move your prior payroll data and set the account up rather than handing you a spreadsheet template, which for a mid year switch is the difference between doable and not.

Where it runs out

There is no Canadian payroll, so a cross border employer needs a second provider. The HR features are adequate rather than a reason to buy, so anyone wanting real performance management or applicant tracking will pair it with something else. The mobile experience is a responsive site rather than a native app, and reviewers who wanted an app say so.

One price and every feature is in it

We run an agricultural operation and Form 943 is not something most payroll products handle. OnPay does it properly, alongside our regular staff on 941. Finding one system for both was why we chose them and it has worked for three years.

I called about a multi state withholding question and got someone who understood reciprocity agreements without me explaining what they were. That is a very different conversation from being read a knowledge base article by someone following a flowchart.
