Last updated August 2, 2026The rules for using this site, in plain language
What this site is, how we make money, and what a review does and does not entitle a vendor to.
These are the rules for using this site. We have written them in plain language on purpose. If anything here is unclear, email us at hello@softshortlist.com and a real person will explain it properly.
What this site is
Soft Shortlist is an independent software review and comparison platform. We publish editorial opinion, aggregate ratings computed from verified user reviews, and pricing information gathered from vendors and from users.
What this site is not
- It is not accounting advice.
- It is not tax advice. Nothing here tells you how to handle a filing with the IRS or with CRA. Talk to a CPA or a CPA Canada member.
- It is not legal advice.
- It is not a guarantee that any product will suit your business.
We write about software that touches tax and payroll, so we name specific forms and filings. We do so to help you evaluate software, not to tell you how to comply with anything.
How we make money
Some links to vendors are affiliate links. If you sign up through one we may earn a commission at no additional cost to you. This is explained fully in our affiliate disclosure.
Being an affiliate partner does not buy a vendor anything editorially. Ratings are computed automatically from verified reviews and cannot be edited by anyone, including us. This is set out in our editorial policy and it is the entire basis on which this site is worth reading.
Pricing on this site
We show prices in US dollars because nearly every vendor in this category lists in USD for US and Canadian customers alike. Where a vendor genuinely lists in Canadian dollars we label it. Prices change without telling us. Always confirm on the vendor's own site before you buy, and treat anything here as a guide rather than an offer.
Writing a review
You may submit a review if you have actually used the product. When you do:
- Be truthful. Write about your own experience.
- Do not submit a review of your own employer's product, or a competitor's.
- Do not accept payment or any other incentive from a vendor to write it.
- Do not include anyone else's personal information.
- You keep ownership of what you write. You give us a license to publish it, show it and quote it.
We may decline or remove a review that breaks these rules. We do not remove a review because a vendor asked us to, and we have been asked.
Using our content
The words, design and code on this site belong to us. You may quote us with attribution and a link. You may not republish substantial portions, and you may not scrape the review corpus to train a model or build a competing directory.
Where we stand behind this
We work hard to be accurate and we will be wrong sometimes. Software changes, vendors reprice, features are removed. We publish this site as is, and we are not liable for a decision you make based on it. Check anything that matters before you spend money.
If we have something wrong, tell us and we will correct it and note the correction.
Which law applies
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Illinois in the United States. If you are a consumer in Canada, nothing here removes rights you have under Canadian consumer protection law, and if the two conflict, your statutory rights win.
Changes
We may update these terms. The date at the top of this page tells you when we last did.
