Overview

What is Sage Timeslips?

Sage Timeslips is time and billing software for firms that bill by the hour, and it has been the default in small US law and accounting practices for a long time. It is narrow on purpose. It captures time, applies the right rate, and produces an invoice a client will pay without arguing.

What it does well

Rate handling is the reason firms stay. Rates by timekeeper, by client, by matter and by task, with overrides that cascade in the order a real firm expects. Anyone who has tried to model a blended rate or a client specific discount in a general purpose tool knows why that matters.

The bill itself is the other reason. Timeslips produces the itemized, narrative style invoice that professional clients expect, including work in progress review before anything goes out, and the LEDES export that corporate clients increasingly demand from their outside counsel.

Where it fits

Small to mid sized professional firms in the United States, typically two to fifty timekeepers. It is not practice management, it is not a CRM, and it will not run your matters. It bills, and it bills well.

Where it frustrates people

This is Windows desktop software and it makes no apology for it. Remote work means a hosted desktop or a VPN, and firms that went fully distributed have found that friction hard to live with. The interface is dated even by the standards of this list, onboarding a new timekeeper takes real training, and the cloud native competition has closed a lot of the functional gap while being considerably nicer to use. Buy it for the rate engine and the billing, not for the experience.

Database issues cost us two days

We moved to a cloud practice management suite last year and I regret waiting. The billing is very slightly less flexible and everything else is dramatically better. The gap Timeslips used to have has mostly closed.

Work in progress review catches everything

We are eleven timekeepers and it handles trust accounting properly, which for a law firm is not optional. The compliance side is genuinely solid.

The cloud competition has caught up

We had a database corruption that took two days and a support call to resolve. We had backups so nothing was lost except the two days. For software this old and this mature that should not still be a failure mode.

Pros

Rate structures no general tool can match

Windows desktop only, hard for remote firms

Integrations

What does Sage Timeslips integrate with?
