Database issues cost us two days

We moved to a cloud practice management suite last year and I regret waiting. The billing is very slightly less flexible and everything else is dramatically better. The gap Timeslips used to have has mostly closed.

Work in progress review catches everything

We are eleven timekeepers and it handles trust accounting properly, which for a law firm is not optional. The compliance side is genuinely solid.

The cloud competition has caught up

We had a database corruption that took two days and a support call to resolve. We had backups so nothing was lost except the two days. For software this old and this mature that should not still be a failure mode.

Pros

Rate structures no general tool can match

Cons

Windows desktop only, hard for remote firms

LEDES export kept a corporate client

It is old and I do not care. It bills correctly, every month, and billing correctly is the only thing I need it to do.

Windows only, in a firm that went remote

It bills better than anything else I have used and it does nothing else. No practice management, no matter management, no CRM. If you want those you are buying a second product, and then you are managing an integration.

Itemized narrative invoices clients accept

Essentially no integrations

Our invoices are itemized and narrative and clients pay them without a fight. When we trialled a modern cloud tool the bills got vaguer and our realization dropped. We came straight back.

Twelve years in and it still bills right

Rates by timekeeper, by client, by matter, with overrides that cascade in the right order. I have tried to build this in three other products and none of them could do it without a workaround. For a firm with client specific rate cards it is the whole product.

A corporate client mandated LEDES billing and gave us sixty days. Timeslips already did it. That kept the relationship, and the relationship was worth more than every software decision I have made.

Support quality has fallen off

The release notes have been maintenance and compatibility fixes for years. Nothing has been meaningfully improved. It works, but it does not feel like a product anyone is investing in, and that makes me nervous about the next five years.
