Overview

What is BambooHR?

BambooHR occupies a specific and valuable position: it is the HR system for companies that have outgrown a spreadsheet and are nowhere near needing Workday. That sounds like faint praise and it is not. Most products aimed at this band either stay too thin to replace the spreadsheet or arrive with an implementation project the company cannot absorb.

What people buy it for

Onboarding is the most cited feature. A new hire gets a link, completes their own paperwork including the I-9 and W-4, signs what needs signing, and arrives on day one already in the system. HR teams describe getting a week back per hire.

The employee record itself is the quiet win. One place for compensation history, documents, time off balances, emergency contacts and reviews, with permissions that let managers see their own team and nothing else. Reporting on headcount, turnover and time off comes out of the box rather than needing a report writer.

Pricing is published now

Core runs 10 dollars per employee per month, Pro 17 and Elite 25, for organizations at 25 employees and above. Under 25 employees it is a flat rate starting around 250 dollars a month, which is the part that catches very small teams out. Volume discounts apply as headcount grows.

Where it frustrates people

Payroll is a separate product and it is US only. Plenty of buyers assume an HR platform runs payroll, discover during implementation that it is another line item, and end up integrating with what they already had. Confirm this before you sign.

Customization has a ceiling. Approval chains are simpler than a large organization needs, custom fields are limited compared with a configurable platform, and companies past roughly a thousand people consistently describe hitting walls. That is the product working as designed and it is still worth knowing where the wall sits.

Onboarding gave me a week back per hire

Headcount and turnover reporting comes out of the box. Our board asked for twelve month attrition by department and I had it in about four minutes rather than the day it used to take.

Employees find their own documents now

The mobile app is genuinely used by our field staff, which I did not expect. They request time off from their phones and approvals happen the same day.

Time off arguments simply ended

Employees look up their own time off balance, their own documents and their own handbook instead of emailing me. I reckon that removed thirty or forty interruptions a month, and each one used to break whatever I was doing.
