Overview

What is ClickUp?

ClickUp's pitch is that it replaces your project tool, your docs, your whiteboard, your time tracker and your goal tracker. It largely can. Whether you want it to is the real question.

What it does well

The value is hard to argue with. Time tracking, goals, docs, whiteboards, dashboards, forms and dependencies are all included on plans that cost less than a competitor's entry tier. For an agency that would otherwise buy Asana plus Harvest plus Notion, the consolidation is genuine.

Views are the strength: the same work renders as a list, a board, a Gantt chart, a calendar or a workload chart, and different people on one team can each work the way they prefer.

Where it frustrates people

Complexity is the cost. The hierarchy of workspace, space, folder, list, task and subtask is more structure than most teams need, and new users are visibly lost in week one. Expect to spend real time on setup and conventions.

Performance and bugs come up repeatedly in the reviews. It has improved, but large workspaces still feel slower than the competition, and the pace of shipping means the occasional regression. If you want boring reliability over breadth, buy something else.

Everyone works in the view they prefer

The same work renders as a list for me, a board for the designers and a Gantt chart for the client. Nobody has to work the way someone else prefers, which quietly removed a recurring argument.

Pros

It genuinely replaces a project tool, a time tracker and a docs tool.

Cons

Large workspaces feel slower than the competition.

Great value, real setup cost

Workspace, space, folder, list, task, subtask. That hierarchy is more structure than most teams need and new users are visibly lost in week one. We wrote our own conventions doc, which helped, but that is a real cost.

Pros

The same work renders as list, board, Gantt, calendar or workload.

Cons

The workspace, space, folder, list hierarchy is more structure than most teams need.

Slow on a large workspace

Our workspace has a few thousand tasks and pages take a noticeable moment to load. Not unusable, just constantly slightly slower than everything else we run. At this price I accept it, but I notice it every day.

Pros

Native time tracking is included, even on the free plan.

Cons

New users are genuinely lost in the first week.
