Rippling's idea is that hiring someone should provision their payroll, their benefits, their laptop and their software accounts from a single record. When it works, it removes an entire category of admin, and the reviews from operations leads are the most enthusiastic on this site.
What it does well
Onboarding is the standout. Add a new hire and their payroll, health plan, Google account, Slack and laptop are all provisioned from one form. Offboarding reverses it, which closes the security hole every growing company has, where a departed employee keeps access for months.
Global employment is handled: contractors in 100 plus countries, and employer of record where you have no entity.
Tax and filing
US payroll is full service across all 50 states, with automatic Form 941, 940, W-2 and 1099-NEC filing.
Canadian payroll is supported as its own module, with T4, ROE, CPP and EI handled. Rippling is one of the few products here that runs both countries on one platform rather than one company with two contracts, which is a genuine advantage for a cross border team.
Where it frustrates people
The modular pricing is where the complaints concentrate. The advertised entry price covers very little, and a realistic configuration with payroll, benefits and device management costs multiples of it. Quotes are per module and require a sales call. It is also more system than a ten person company needs, and several reviews describe buying it too early.
