Overview

What is Sage 50 Accounting?

Sage 50 is what used to be Peachtree, and a large part of its North American install base has been running it since it carried that name. That history matters, because it explains both halves of this product: the accounting engine underneath is deeper than almost anything at its price, and the experience around it still feels like software that was designed before the browser won.

What it does well

The general ledger is the real thing. Audit trails, true double entry, serialized inventory, job costing, and multi company consolidation on Premium and above. If your accountant has ever asked for something QuickBooks Online could not produce, this is usually the product they were quietly wishing you were on.

Inventory is the standout. Assemblies, serial number tracking and costing methods that actually hold up under a real audit put it ahead of most cloud native competitors, which tend to treat inventory as a bolt on.

Tax and filing

Sales tax is tracked by jurisdiction and the reporting supports a multi state return without an export. The payroll module is a separate subscription and handles Form 941, W-2 and 1099 filing, with tiered pricing by employee count.

Be clear eyed about Canada. The US edition and the Canadian edition are different products, not a setting, exactly as they are with QuickBooks. If you run entities on both sides of the border you are buying twice.

Where it frustrates people

The cloud story is a connection, not a rebuild. Sage 50 Cloud gives you remote access, automatic backups and real time collaboration, but the application is still the Windows application. There is no meaningful browser experience and no mobile app worth the name, and reviewers who arrive expecting Xero are consistently disappointed.

Pricing is the other recurring theme. At 128.67 per month for a single user on Pro, it is not a cheap product, the commitment is annual, and renewal increases land the same way they do everywhere else in this category. The value case rests entirely on whether you need the depth.

It does what the accountant asks for

Job costing is genuinely good. We track labor and materials against jobs as they happen and I can see margin before the job closes instead of after. For a small construction outfit that is the whole ballgame.
