Overview

What is Sage HR?

Sage HR is the cloud product in Sage's people line, and it is honest about what it is. The core is an employee record and a leave system, at 6.50 per employee per month. Everything else is a module you add when you need it, which makes it one of the few HR products where a twenty person company can buy exactly what it uses and nothing else.

What it does well

Leave management is the strongest part and it is what most customers actually buy. Accrual rules, carryover, approval chains and a shared calendar that stops two people on the same team booking the same week. For a company currently running time off in a spreadsheet, this solves the whole problem in an afternoon.

The module structure is genuinely useful rather than a pricing trick. Performance at 3.25, shift scheduling at 3.25, timesheets at 3.25, expenses at 1.75, all per employee per month, and recruitment at a flat 210 per month. You can start at 6.50 and stay there for years.

What it is not

This is the important part and the reviews are consistent about it. Sage HR is not payroll in North America. There is no US payroll engine, no Form 941, no W-2 filing, and no Canadian T4 or ROE. It integrates with payroll, it does not run it. Teams that assumed the Sage name meant payroll was included have been unhappy, and that is the single most common complaint in this product's reviews.

Where it frustrates people

Reporting is thin once you want anything beyond the standard set, and the module boundaries can feel arbitrary when a report you want sits behind one you did not buy. It is also a product built for small and mid sized teams. Past roughly five hundred employees the customization and workflow depth run out, and that is the point at which Sage would rather sell you People or HCM anyway.

We added timesheets a year in and it slotted straight on. No migration, no renegotiation, just a line on the invoice. The modular thing is real and not a pricing trick.

Six fifty a head is the right price for this

We tracked vacation in a shared spreadsheet for four years and it was wrong constantly. This replaced it in an afternoon and the arguments stopped. Accruals, carryover and a calendar everyone can see. That is all we needed and that is exactly what we bought.

Six fifty per employee per month for the core
