Past 50 employees, the HR system stops being a convenience and starts being infrastructure. Onboarding, time off, performance reviews and compliance recordkeeping all run through it daily, and a bad fit at this size is expensive to unwind. The two names that come up most often in our reviews at this headcount are BambooHR and Rippling, and they represent two genuinely different philosophies rather than two competitors chasing the same customer.
BambooHR: built to actually get finished
BambooHR occupies a specific and valuable position in this market. It is the HR system for companies that have outgrown a spreadsheet and are nowhere near needing an enterprise platform like Workday. That sounds like faint praise, and it genuinely is not, because most products aimed at this exact band either stay too thin to replace the spreadsheet or arrive with an implementation project the company cannot realistically absorb.
The onboarding flow is the most cited reason people buy it. A new hire gets a link, completes their own paperwork including the I-9 and W-4, signs what needs signing, and arrives on day one already set up in the system. HR teams consistently describe getting a full week back per hire compared with a manual process, and at 50 or more employees with regular hiring, that time savings compounds fast.
The employee record itself is the quiet win underneath the flashier onboarding feature. One place for compensation history, documents, time off balances, emergency contacts and performance reviews, with permissions that let a manager see their own team and genuinely nothing else. Headcount, turnover and time off reporting come out of the box rather than requiring a report builder, which matters for a company at this size that does not yet have a dedicated HR analyst.
Where BambooHR stops
Pricing is published rather than quoted, which is itself worth noting in a category where most vendors hide behind a sales call. Core runs 10 dollars per employee per month, Pro 17, and Elite 25, for organizations at 25 employees and above. That transparency lets you model your actual cost before a demo, which our reviewers consistently appreciate.
Payroll is a genuinely separate product, and US only. This catches buyers who assume an HR platform runs payroll as a matter of course. If you are past 50 employees and need Canadian payroll, or want payroll and HR genuinely unified in one system rather than integrated between two, BambooHR is not that product, and you will end up connecting it to something else regardless.
Customization has a real ceiling. Approval chains are simpler than a genuinely large organization needs, custom fields are limited compared with a fully configurable platform, and companies well past a thousand employees consistently describe hitting walls. At 50 to a few hundred employees, most companies do not hit that ceiling yet, but it is worth knowing where it sits if your growth plans are aggressive.
Rippling: one system of record for employment, IT and payroll
Rippling's core idea is structurally different. Hiring someone should provision their payroll, their benefits, their company laptop and their software account access from a single record, all at once. When it works as designed, it removes an entire category of manual admin work, and the reviews from operations leads specifically are consistently the most enthusiastic on this site.
At 50 or more employees, this starts to matter in ways it does not at 15. IT provisioning becomes a real bottleneck once hiring reaches a steady cadence, and offboarding a departed employee cleanly, across every system they had access to, becomes a genuine security concern rather than a checklist item. Rippling closes that gap directly: add a new hire and their payroll, health plan, company email and business software are all provisioned from one form, and departure reverses all of it at once.
Global employment support is also relevant at this size if your growth includes contractors or hires outside the US and Canada. Rippling supports contractors in over 100 countries and employer of record arrangements where you have no local entity, which BambooHR does not attempt.
Where Rippling costs more than the sticker suggests
The modular pricing structure is where the complaints concentrate in our reviews, and it is worth taking seriously before you sign. The advertised 8 dollar per user per month entry price covers the employee record and HR core, essentially the same layer BambooHR's Core tier covers. Payroll, benefits administration and device management are each separate modules priced on top, quoted through a sales call rather than published, and a realistic configuration at 50 or more employees with several modules enabled runs to a multiple of that entry number.
This is not a criticism of the model, which genuinely reflects what you are buying: real, deep functionality across HR, IT and payroll rather than HR alone. It is a caution against comparing the advertised entry price directly against BambooHR's published Pro or Elite tiers, because you are very likely not comparing equivalent configurations.
The decision at this specific headcount
| BambooHR | Rippling | |
|---|---|---|
| Core strength | Onboarding and the employee record, done cleanly | Unified HR, IT and payroll from one record |
| Pricing model | Published, per employee, tiered | Modular, quoted per module |
| Payroll | Separate product, US only | Included as a module, US and Canada |
| IT and device provisioning | Not offered | Core strength |
| Global contractors and employer of record | Not offered | Supported |
| Customization ceiling | Real, reached past roughly 1,000 employees | Higher, more configurable |

What we would actually do
If your company at 50 or more employees is US based, has payroll and IT provisioning already reasonably handled elsewhere, and mainly needs a clean, fast to implement system of record for HR, choose BambooHR and take advantage of its published, predictable pricing. If your company is scaling headcount and IT footprint together, spans the US and Canada, or is starting to feel real pain from disconnected onboarding and offboarding across systems, Rippling's higher and less predictable price is buying something BambooHR structurally cannot offer, and it is worth the premium.
The two products are not really competing for the same buyer. One is trying to be finished quickly. The other is trying to be everything. Know which one you actually need before the sales call, because both salespeople will make a convincing case.
