Powerful, and it shows its age daily

Sage is investing in Intacct Construction and everyone knows it. I asked directly and got a reassuring but non specific answer. I would push harder than I did before signing another term.

The install base is the reassurance

New staff need weeks. Not days, weeks. That is a real cost when your accounting team turns over, and it is the strongest argument for eventually moving.

Public work is possible because of this

Federally funded work with certified payroll and multiple unions is simply not possible for a firm our size without something like this. It is the price of entry to that market.

Job cost across hundreds of concurrent jobs

Timberline still does the hard things right

Everyone calls it Timberline and everyone complains about it and nobody leaves, because it does the genuinely hard things correctly. Certified payroll, union fringes, subcontract control. That is not a coincidence.

Enormous install base, so skills are findable

Cons

Implementation is a year long project

It will not pay a sub with expired insurance

We build and we hold, and having construction accounting and property management with CAM reconciliation in one system means we are not running two companies on two platforms.

Four hundred jobs and it does not blink

Subcontract compliance will not release a payment while an insurance certificate is expired. That control has saved us from real exposure twice. It is the kind of feature you do not appreciate until the day it stops you.

Reporting means Crystal and a consultant

It looks and behaves like software from the 1990s because in important ways it is. Our newer PMs find it genuinely difficult and that affects who we can hire into the role. The functionality is unmatched and the experience is indefensible.

We are stuck and we know it

Twenty years of data and every process built around it. Moving would be a two year project we cannot afford, so we stay and we complain. Sage knows that, and the renewal increases reflect it.

Union payroll with fringes, correctly, every week

Three unions, different fringe calculations, different reporting, weekly. It has never been wrong. I have watched two general payroll systems fail at this and cost firms real money in back pay and penalties.

The install base is the reassurance

The interface is genuinely dated and the module boundaries reflect decisions from decades ago. It also does things no modern competitor does. That is the trade and most firms our size make it knowingly.

The interface is from another century

A year from signature to go live with a specialist partner and a number I will not put in writing. It works now. Getting here consumed our controller for twelve months and she is honest that she nearly quit.

Anything beyond the standard reports is Crystal Reports and a consultant. We have a standing arrangement with someone just for reporting, which is a permanent line in the budget nobody mentioned at the start.
