We are stuck and we know it

It looks and behaves like software from the 1990s because in important ways it is. Our newer PMs find it genuinely difficult and that affects who we can hire into the role. The functionality is unmatched and the experience is indefensible.

Pros

Subcontract compliance holds that block payment

Cons

Implementation is a year long project

Ease of use
Value for money
Customer service

It will not pay a sub with expired insurance

Three unions, different fringe calculations, different reporting, weekly. It has never been wrong. I have watched two general payroll systems fail at this and cost firms real money in back pay and penalties.

Pros

Enormous install base, so skills are findable

Cons

Custom reporting needs Crystal and a consultant

The install base is the reassurance

Sage is investing in Intacct Construction and everyone knows it. I asked directly and got a reassuring but non specific answer. I would push harder than I did before signing another term.

We appreciate the feedback. Implementation for a business of your complexity is a significant undertaking, and we are sorry it was difficult. We would welcome a conversation about how we can better support your team now that you are live.

Old software that does hard things well

The interface is genuinely dated and the module boundaries reflect decisions from decades ago. It also does things no modern competitor does. That is the trade and most firms our size make it knowingly.

Pros

Certified payroll for federally funded work

Switching cost is high enough to feel like lock in

Federally funded work with certified payroll and multiple unions is simply not possible for a firm our size without something like this. It is the price of entry to that market.

Union payroll with fringes, correctly, every week

Everyone calls it Timberline and everyone complains about it and nobody leaves, because it does the genuinely hard things correctly. Certified payroll, union fringes, subcontract control. That is not a coincidence.

The reassurance is that everybody runs it. People who know Timberline are findable, which after twenty years is not nothing. Try hiring a controller who knows a niche cloud product.
