Excellent engine, awful front end

Nobody would call this pleasant. It is dense, grey and clearly built by accountants for accountants. It is also right, which matters more. I would not change the tradeoff but I would like a nicer window to look at.

Form 4562 output that auditors accept

It knows the tax rules so I do not have to

Form 4562 prints in the format the IRS wants and our accountant does not touch it. That used to be a two day exercise at year end.

Pros

Multiple parallel books from one asset record

Handles both US and Canadian assets properly

We have assets in both the US and Canada, and having MACRS and CCA in one system with one asset register was the deciding factor. Everything else we looked at meant two products.

Our auditors used to spend a day on fixed assets. Now they pull the schedule, tie it out and move on. Genuinely shortened the audit.

Bonus depreciation handled without me reading the code

Section 179 limits and bonus depreciation change constantly and I no longer track it. Sage updates the tax content and the calculation is simply correct. That is worth the maintenance fee on its own.

Pros

Genuinely shortens the fixed asset audit

Hard to justify under about a hundred assets

It knows the tax rules so I do not have to

We ran depreciation in Excel for nine years and I always half suspected it was wrong. It was. The first reconciliation after we moved found errors going back four years. This product paid for itself in the first month just by being right.

Excellent engine, awful front end

If you have fifty assets, keep your spreadsheet and spend the money elsewhere. We have about eleven hundred and it is essential. There is a threshold and you should be honest with yourself about which side of it you are on.

The initial import ate a week

I understand it is a mature product but the interface has genuinely not changed in ten years. Onboarding anyone new means sitting with them for a full day, and that cost is real even if it does not appear on the invoice.
