The filings just happen

New hire onboarding used to be a folder of PDFs and a week of chasing. Now they get a link, fill in their own W-4 and direct deposit, and they are in the next run. We hired six people last year and it was a non event every time.

Pros

Multi state payroll is included rather than an add on fee per state.

Cons

Resolving an agency tax notice can take weeks.

First payroll tool my team actually likes

Benefits sync back to payroll so deductions are simply right. No spreadsheet, no reconciliation, no discovering an error in March.

Pros

Form 941, 940, W-2 and 1099-NEC filings are automatic and included, in all 50 states.

Cons

Resolving an agency tax notice can take weeks.

First payroll tool my team actually likes

W-2s went out in January without me doing anything. I checked them, they were correct, and that was the whole of year end.

Pros

Running payroll takes about three minutes once it is set up.

Cons

Reporting is thin compared with ADP or Paychex.

Onboarding a new hire takes minutes now

I am not a payroll person and I run payroll in about three minutes every other Friday. Form 941 and our state filings happen without me knowing they happened. That is exactly what I wanted and never got from our previous provider.

Pros

New hire onboarding handles the I-9, W-4 and direct deposit without paper.

Cons

There is no Canadian payroll. No T4, no ROE, no CPP and no EI.

Pros

Benefits and 401(k) deductions sync back to payroll correctly.

Great product, the per person fee adds up

It was outstanding three years ago. It is good now. Response times have stretched and the first line answer is more often a help article link than an answer. Still better than most, but the direction is the wrong way.

We have staff in four states and multi state payroll is included rather than surcharged. Our old provider wanted an extra fee per state, which for a remote team was a real cost.

A tax notice took three weeks to resolve

We opened a Toronto office and discovered Gusto does not do Canadian payroll at all. No T4, no ROE, nothing. We now run a second provider for two employees, which is exactly the complexity we bought Gusto to avoid. Check this before you commit if you have any cross border plan.

Contractor payments and January 1099 filing are part of the base product.

There is no Canadian payroll. No T4, no ROE, no CPP and no EI.
