Payroll stopped being the thing I dread

I am not a payroll person and I run payroll in about three minutes every other Friday. Form 941 and our state filings happen without me knowing they happened. That is exactly what I wanted and never got from our previous provider.

Pros

Benefits and 401(k) deductions sync back to payroll correctly.

Cons

Resolving an agency tax notice can take weeks.

Payroll stopped being the thing I dread

We have staff in four states and multi state payroll is included rather than surcharged. Our old provider wanted an extra fee per state, which for a remote team was a real cost.

Pros

Running payroll takes about three minutes once it is set up.

Resolving an agency tax notice can take weeks.

Support got worse as they got bigger

At twelve people it was excellent value. At forty the monthly bill is real money and I have started pricing alternatives. The product has not got worse, we just got bigger and the model scales against us.

Pros

Benefits and 401(k) deductions sync back to payroll correctly.

Cons

Support has slowed noticeably as the company has grown.

First payroll tool my team actually likes

New hire onboarding used to be a folder of PDFs and a week of chasing. Now they get a link, fill in their own W-4 and direct deposit, and they are in the next run. We hired six people last year and it was a non event every time.

Pros

Running payroll takes about three minutes once it is set up.

Cons

Reporting is thin compared with ADP or Paychex.

The filings just happen

Benefits sync back to payroll so deductions are simply right. No spreadsheet, no reconciliation, no discovering an error in March.

Pros

Contractor payments and January 1099 filing are part of the base product.

Cons

There is no Canadian payroll. No T4, no ROE, no CPP and no EI.

W-2s went out in January without me doing anything. I checked them, they were correct, and that was the whole of year end.

Pros

New hire onboarding handles the I-9, W-4 and direct deposit without paper.

Cons

Some HR features are gated to the Premium tier at a large jump in price.

Support got worse as they got bigger

It was outstanding three years ago. It is good now. Response times have stretched and the first line answer is more often a help article link than an answer. Still better than most, but the direction is the wrong way.

Reporting is thin compared with ADP or Paychex.
