Killed our time off spreadsheet in an afternoon

I set it up myself in a morning with no implementation call and no consultant. For a forty person company that is the entire value proposition.

Pros

Leave and absence management is genuinely excellent

Cons

Performance module is basic

Approval chains finally match how we work

The pricing is what sold me. Six fifty per person for core HR and leave, and I add modules only when I need them. Every other product wanted to sell me a platform. This let me buy a feature.

Pros

Six fifty per employee per month for the core

Cons

Performance module is basic

Ease of use

Reporting runs out fast

We are at three hundred and twenty people now and starting to feel the ceiling. Workflow customization is limited and the approval logic cannot express our new structure. It was perfect at eighty.

Self service that employees actually adopt

Thank you for the feedback. Sage HR is designed to integrate with payroll providers rather than process payroll directly, and we appreciate that this is not always clear during evaluation. Our team can walk you through the payroll integrations available in your region.

The shared calendar stopped two people on the same small team booking the same week, which used to happen twice a year and caused real problems.

Employee self service actually gets used. People book their own time off, managers approve on their phone, and I stopped being the middle of every request. Adoption was immediate, which never happens.

Priced so a small team can actually buy it

We tracked vacation in a shared spreadsheet for four years and it was wrong constantly. This replaced it in an afternoon and the arguments stopped. Accruals, carryover and a calendar everyone can see. That is all we needed and that is exactly what we bought.

Leave and absence management is genuinely excellent

Support is email and patience

We bought it assuming a company called Sage selling HR software would run payroll. There is no US payroll engine, no Form 941, no W-2. We found out during implementation and had to buy a second product. Entirely our fault for not checking, and I still think the positioning invites the mistake.

Good product, wrong name

Leave management is genuinely excellent. Everything else is adequate. Performance reviews are basic next to a purpose built tool and the org chart is decorative. Buy it for leave and treat the rest as a bonus.

Fine until you pass a few hundred people

Standard reports are fine. Anything custom and you are exporting to Excel. For a small company that is survivable and it is still a gap worth knowing about before you commit.

No US payroll is a real problem

It integrates with payroll rather than running it, which means you are still paying someone else for the part that actually has to be right. For a small company that is two vendors and two bills to do what should be one job.

We added timesheets a year in and it slotted straight on. No migration, no renegotiation, just a line on the invoice. The modular thing is real and not a pricing trick.
