The tool nobody needed training for

The message board is why we stay. A decision made in March is findable in November, with the reasoning and who disagreed. In chat that conversation would have scrolled away in a day and we would relitigate it every quarter.

A genuinely free plan for one real project

Check ins replaced our status meeting

We loop clients into specific message threads while keeping internal discussion private, and they do not need a seat or an explanation of permissions. For an agency that is worth more than any Gantt chart.

Pros

No training required for anyone to use it correctly

No resource management or utilization view

The tool nobody needed training for

I have used it for nine years and it has barely changed. In an industry where every tool adds an AI assistant nobody asked for, that stability is a feature. My team is not relearning the software every six months.

Two hundred and ninety nine flat for everyone

I rolled it out on a Monday with no training session and no documentation. By Wednesday everyone was using it correctly. Every other tool we have adopted needed a session, a champion and three months of nagging.

Automatic check in questions replaced our Monday status meeting entirely. Everyone answers what they are working on in their own time, it is all in one place, and we got an hour a week back per person.

Great small, questionable large

Time tracking needs a third party add on. We use Everhour and it is fine, and it is another tool and another bill for something most competitors include.

The free plan let us run one real project properly before committing. Not a countdown, an actual project. We were paying within a month because it was obvious.

Internal email dropped by about half in the first two months because the conversation moved to where the work is. That was not something I was even trying to fix.

Search struggles once you have years of history

After four years and a few hundred projects, finding an old discussion is harder than it should be. Search returns a lot and ranks it poorly, and I often remember roughly when something was said and cannot get to it.

Thanks for the thoughtful review. We deliberately leave out dependencies and Gantt charts because they add complexity most teams do not need, and we accept that makes us the wrong choice for some work. We appreciate you setting that out fairly.

Deliberately less software, know that going in

There is no meaningful reporting. I cannot see utilization, I cannot see project profitability, and cross project visibility is thin. We keep those answers in a spreadsheet, which is the trade we knowingly made.

No dependencies ended it for our construction team

Growing past about eighty people we needed portfolio reporting and resource visibility and there is no path to it inside Basecamp. Exporting years of discussion into a new tool was genuinely awful, and much of the context did not survive.
