Simple enough that I actually maintain it

We are nineteen people and we offer health coverage that our candidates recognise from much larger employers. Shopping that on our own we were quoted terribly. Inside the pooled risk it is a different market, and it has directly won us two hires against bigger competitors.

Pros

Access to large group health plans a small employer cannot buy alone

Cons

Leaving means unwinding an employer of record relationship

Onboarding a new state took a day

Payroll runs itself, the 401(k) is integrated, and I have not thought about a tax filing in two years. For a company of our size that is the entire value proposition.

Pros

Multi state compliance and registration handled for you

Cons

The value case weakens as you pass roughly a hundred employees

Health plans we could never buy alone

Workers compensation is bundled rather than a separate broker relationship and a separate audit. That removed an annual exercise nobody on our team was qualified to do.

An onboarding error took weeks to unpick

At a hundred and forty people the platform fee is a large line item for what is, at that size, payroll and benefits administration we could run ourselves. The value curve genuinely turns and nobody tells you where the turn is.

Support answers at eleven at night

I have contacted support at genuinely odd hours and got a competent human quickly, by phone and by Slack. As a founder doing HR at eleven at night after the real work, that availability is not a nice to have.

Leaving is a genuine project

We started the process of moving off and it is far more involved than cancelling software, because you are unwinding an employer of record relationship. State registrations have to be re established in your own name, and the timeline runs into months. Budget for it before you sign, not when you leave.

Response from the vendorMar 16, 2026

Thank you for the feedback. We are sorry the correction took as long as it did, as amended filings depend partly on agency timelines but our communication should have been clearer. Please reach out if anything is still open.

Onboarding a new state took a day

We have people in four states and the compliance surface terrified me. Registrations, filings, state specific requirements. That is now their problem rather than mine and it is the single largest reason we pay the premium.

Co employment takes explaining internally

At fifteen people the pooled rates were a bargain. At around a hundred and thirty we started getting comparable direct quotes and the per employee fee became the expensive part. We are modelling a move, which I understand is the normal life cycle rather than a complaint.

Every other PEO we spoke to would not give a number without a discovery call and a proposal. Justworks publishes seventy nine and one hundred and nine per employee on their website. That transparency is why they got our shortlist and eventually our business.
