Boring in the way accounting software should be

We moved off spreadsheets two years ago and I have not thought about the ledger since. The bank rules learned our vendors within about six weeks and now roughly 90 percent of transactions categorize themselves. My accountant pulls what she needs without asking me for anything.

Pros

Reporting is deep. Class and location tracking answers questions other tools cannot.

Cons

Sales tax setup for economic nexus took our accountant a full afternoon.

Boring in the way accounting software should be

Reporting is the part I underrated. Class tracking lets me see profit by location without exporting anything, and I run the same three reports every Monday in about two minutes.

Pros

Bank feeds connect to every institution we use, including our small credit union.

Cons

Sales tax setup for economic nexus took our accountant a full afternoon.

Fine, but I resent the price

Capable software wrapped in a cluttered interface. Everything I need is in there somewhere, usually two menus deeper than it should be. Once you learn the paths it is fine, but nobody would call it well designed.

Pros

Reporting is deep. Class and location tracking answers questions other tools cannot.

Cons

Support is slow and inconsistent. Three calls can produce three different answers.

Does the job, costs more every year

Capable software wrapped in a cluttered interface. Everything I need is in there somewhere, usually two menus deeper than it should be. Once you learn the paths it is fine, but nobody would call it well designed.

Pros

Every accountant and bookkeeper in North America knows it, so hiring help is easy.

Cons

The price increases every year at renewal, and the increases are not small.

Month end went from three days to half a day

We moved off spreadsheets two years ago and I have not thought about the ledger since. The bank rules learned our vendors within about six weeks and now roughly 90 percent of transactions categorize themselves. My accountant pulls what she needs without asking me for anything.

Pros

Reconciliation rules genuinely learn. After two months most transactions land correctly on their own.

Cons

Support is slow and inconsistent. Three calls can produce three different answers.

It does the job and my bookkeeper is happy

Sales tax across four states was the thing I dreaded and it handles it. Not perfectly, and I still check it, but it tracks what we owe where and the return prep is straightforward now.

Pros

Bank feeds connect to every institution we use, including our small credit union.

Cons

Useful features keep moving to higher tiers, so staying still costs more over time.

Support is the worst part of the product

The software is fine. Support is not. I spent four hours across three calls trying to fix a payroll tax mapping and got three different answers, none of which worked. In the end a forum post solved it. For what we pay that is not acceptable.

Every accountant we called already knew it

The reason we picked it over Xero was simple: every bookkeeper we interviewed already knew QuickBooks. That made hiring easy and handover at year end a non event. Sometimes the boring answer is the right one.

Fine, but I resent the price

It works. It has always worked. But the price has gone up every single renewal and I get nothing new for it. I stay because moving is painful, not because I am happy, and I suspect Intuit knows that.

We run inventory on the Plus plan and it is accurate enough that we stopped keeping a parallel spreadsheet. That was the whole reason we upgraded and it paid off.

Pros

Reconciliation rules genuinely learn. After two months most transactions land correctly on their own.

The price increases every year at renewal, and the increases are not small.
